Trade-Offs Between Real-Time and Fault Tolerance for Middleware Applications

چکیده

The OMG’s Real-Time CORBA (RT-CORBA) and FaultTolerant CORBA (FT-CORBA) specifications make it possible for today’s CORBA implementations to exhibit either real-time or fault tolerance in isolation. While real-time requires a priori knowledge of the system’s temporal operation, fault tolerance necessarily deals with faults that occur unexpectedly, and with possibly unpredictable fault recovery times. When both realtime and fault-tolerance are required to be satisfied within the same system, it is rather likely that trade-offs are made during the composition. The contribution of this paper is the identification of the conflicts between real-time and fault tolerance.

Architecting and Implementing Versatile Dependability

Distributed applications must often consider and select the appropriate trade-offs among three important aspects – fault-tolerance, performance and resources. We introduce a novel concept, called versatile dependability, that provides a framework for analyzing and reasoning about these trade-offs in dependable software architectures. We present the architecture of a middleware framework that im...

Improving Performance in Adaptive Fault Tolerance Structure with investigating the effect of the number of replication

Regarding the wide use of distributed systems in various areas, having a system with fault tolerance ability would be an import characteristic. And in designing the real time distributed systems, this seems to be more considerable. With regard using some middleware like CORBA in designing such systems, and in order to increase their compatibility, speed, performance, to simplify the network pro...

Architecture of ROAFTS/Solaris: A Solaris-Based Middleware for Real-Time Object-Oriented Adaptive Fault Tolerance Support

Middleware implementation of various critical services required by large-scale and complex real-time applications on top of COTS operating system is currently an approach of growing interests. Its main goal is to enable significant reduction in the complexity of application system design and implementation by separating the concerns of the application designer for the application functionality ...

Building and Evaluating a Fault-Tolerant CORBA Infrastructure

In this paper we explore the trade-offs involved in making one major middleware fault-tolerant. Our work builds on the FT-CORBA specification (April 2000), which is not in widespread use due to lack of quantified knowledge about design rules and trade-offs. Recent results show preliminary overhead and trade-off analysis for a not entirely FT-CORBA-compliant system for embedded applications (Ete...
